                                      Academic Excellence

In fall 2007, the Diocese of Belleville Catholic Schools Office retained the services of ECRA Group Inc, a national educational research firm, to work with staff each year in analyzing and reviewing Diocesan achievement test results as part of its ongoing plan for maintaining and achieving academic excellence in its schools. The ECRA research study for this year included analysis of test results for all students in the Classes of 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015.

The value added benefit of the Diocesan instructional program is clearly evidenced in all cases. Whether male or female, whether gifted, average, or in need of additional coaching and extra instructional intervention, this year’s research studies demonstrate again that the longer students attend Diocese of Belleville schools the higher they perform in the academic skills areas of reading, language, mathematics, and science.

The Diocese of Belleville schools administer the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) to students in grades 2- 8 each fall. The ITBS is a nationally standardized achievement test used by public and private schools across the country. The Diocese tested approximately 3400 students in grades 2- 8 during the fall 2010 testing program.

While nationally, half of the students across the country are expected to perform at or above the 50th percentile, the Diocese of Belleville students in grades 2- 8 scored significantly higher. In fact:
                                      • 79% of all students tested in grades 2- 8 in the Diocese of Belleville schools scored at or above the national average in reading,
                                      • 79% of all students scored at or above the national average in language,
                                      • 70% were at or above the national average in mathematics, and
                                      • 80% were at or above the national average in science.

One of the longitudinal research studies tracked 413 grade 8 students (Class of 2011) who attended Diocese of Belleville schools for the four-year testing period of 2007 to 2010. These 413 students represent 89% of the current total grade 8 enrollment of 462 students. Their growth over time is indicated by the high performance levels shown below:
                                      • 84% of these students are at or above the national average in reading,
                                      • 88 % are at or above the national average in language,
                                      • 83% are at or above the national average in mathematics, and
                                      • 87 % are at or above the national average in science.

While some variability in student achievement levels is present across schools, on average, these students not only maintained a high performance level but also grew in the areas of reading, language, mathematics, and science.  The average national percentile changes for the group from grade 5 to grade 8 were as follows:
                                      • In reading from the 76th to the 78th national percentile
                                      • In language from the 78th to the 81st national percentile
                                      • In mathematics form the 72nd to the 80th national percentile
                                      • In science from the 78th to the 79th national percentile

While the above information was based on average performance levels for the total group of 413 students, the research studies also provided information for three different achievement levels within this group of Grade 8 students i.e. high, average and low achieving students. For purposes of this analysis,
                                      • “High achievers” are students who perform better than 75% of the students in Grade 8 across the Diocese,
                                      • “Average achievers” are students at the Diocesan 50th percentile (median) which means one half of the Grade 8 students in the Diocese performed higher than this level and one half of the students in Grade 8 in the Diocese performed lower than this level, and
                                      • “Low achievers” are students in the Diocese who performed better than 25% of the grade 8 students in the Diocese and lower than 75% of the grade 8 students in the Diocese.

Overall, the findings indicated that all three groups of grade 8 students significantly outperformed their counter parts across the nation. In fact, “low achievers” in the Diocese typically performed and grew at levels significantly higher than “average” students across the country.

It is important to note that no one is lost in the numbers. Longitudinal reports for each student are provided to teachers and parents and guardians so everyone in the Diocese of Belleville educational community can join together in helping the students we serve.
